Catalog Description: Undergraduate Teaching in Biology is offered to students that are interested in acting as teaching assistants in biology laboratories or in assisting in the preparation of cadavers for anatomy laboratories. Students will participate in some, or all, of the following activities: read assignments related to labs taught, review and discuss topics in the discipline, assist in laboratory preparation, and assist in the teaching of biological laboratories. Students in this course must have successfully completed the course that they will be assisting with and must have instructor approval. This course is repeatable for credit.

Justification: Many Snow College students are undecided about their career goals. Other students have chosen a career possibility, but lack focus. This course gives students an opportunity to explore biology instruction as a possible career. It also gives students an opportunity to go beyond the normal classroom experience and gain experience that will undoubtedly give them an advantage as they continue their educational pursuits and apply to career programs in education, medicine, or biology.
Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will have: reinforced their knowledge of subjects in biology that they have previously studied; gained more depth of knowledge in these areas of study and related careers; learned some basic techniques of teaching the life sciences
The relative focus of each objective may differ between instructors. Depending upon the supervising faculty member, assessment is based on attendance, participation in weekly reviews and/or lab preparation.
Content:
This course will draw from the following subjects and practices: reading of course material; group review of course material; discussion of teaching techniques; dissection of human cadavers; assisting students in the laboratory. As teaching assistants, Biol 2450 students will experience the variety of levels of preparation that other college students have. They will be introduced to techniques, through observation and experience, that will assist them in teaching the variety of students they encounter.

Pedagogy Statement:
This course will include hands on learning and teaching activities as assigned by the instructor. As teaching assistants, Biol 2450 students will experience the levels of college preparation that their peers have. Through observation and discussions with the Professor, they will learn techniques of teaching that work for the variety of students they assist.
