Catalog Description: This course is designed to provide students with hands-on experience in applying social entrepreneurship concepts and entrepreneurial skills and practices to today's business environment. Students will apply knowledge gained from their various academic and professional disciplines, as well as deploy communication and project management skills, in developing and implementing educational projects using sources in the local community. This course will be guided by the Enactus program and is open to students from all disciplines.

Justification: Participation in this class provides students with the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in their communities while gaining the experience, skills, and contacts necessary to build a successful career. This course supports the entrepreneurial focus of the Business Department, as well as other programs on campus.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Students will be able to demonstrate business communication and presentation skills. Students will be assessed through written assignments, class discussions, and projects.

Students will be able to develop an understanding of local and global business issues and apply content knowledge to develop solutions. Students will be assessed through written assignments, class discussions, and projects.

Students will be able to establish an awareness of ethical and socially responsible conduct while assessing their own individual code of ethics. Students will be assessed through written assignments, class discussions, and projects.

Students will be able to develop and demonstrate team and collaboration skills. Students will be assessed on individual and team efforts through written assignments, reports, projects, and/or presentations.


Content:
Communication
Instruction and practice on how to be conversant in the language of business; to confidently communicate ideas verbally in front of, and to, peers; and to report ideas fluently and persuasively in written form.

Critical Thinking
Experience learning to efficiently gather, analyze, and apply information relevant to making a business decision; to understand the “Law of Unintended Consequences” – that every action has consequences, some positive and some negative; and by thinking ahead one can frequently improve outcomes

Teamwork / Leadership
Contribute to and lead a diverse work group and understand group dynamics

Ethics
Appreciate how societal and ethical considerations enter into business decisions

Strategy
Being able to understand and use the appropriate industry analysis tools

Project Management
Learn to conceive, build, execute, manage, and measure projects from their inception to their sustainable conclusion (when they are turned over to the outside community)

Materials will be distributed by the instructor and may include the current year's Enactus Team Handbook


Pedagogy Statement:
Lectures, in-class exercises, videos, guest lectures, and classroom discussions are all aimed at providing enough background so students can actualize a social enterprise idea into a fully developed business plan by the end of the semester.
