Catalog Description: This course is designed for business majors and those wanting a thorough knowledge of spreadsheets and databases. Students will use the current version of Microsoft Excel and Access. The course will cover introductory to intermediate database and spreadsheet concepts. Students will complete an integrated project using both applications to summarize data that can be analyzed to make decisions. To be successful in the class, students should have a basic understanding of computer applications and file management. BUS 1020 is recommended as a prerequisite. Successful mastery of BUS 2010 and CS 1520 will qualify you for the Snow College 'Foundations of Data Analysis' internal certificate. (Additional fee required)

Justification: This course is required for the ASB and prepares students for job readiness and/or transfer to a university. The course meets the requirements as agreed upon by the UBAAN state committee (articulation committee for the ASB) and is accepted at many state institutions.




Student Learning Outcomes:
Students will use a variety of spreadsheet and database features to effectively organize and manage data. Students will be assessed through hands-on training, assignments, exams, and/or projects. Feedback is provided through an online skills assessment manager and/or rubrics and instructor comments.

Students will use formulas and functions in database and spreadsheet software for efficiency and accuracy in summarizing data.  Students will be assessed through hands-on training, assignments, exams, and/or projects. Feedback is provided through an online skills assessment manager and/or rubrics and instructor comments.

Students will perform appropriate analyses of quantitative and qualitative data using spreadsheet and database software. Students will be assessed through hands-on training, assignments, exams, and/or projects. Feedback is provided through an online skills assessment manager and/or rubrics and instructor comments.

Students will use spreadsheet and database features to complete an integrated project and deliver quality documents using professional standards. Students will be assessed through projects and/or a signature project and reflection. Feedback is provided through rubrics and instructor comments.


Content:
Course objectives will be accomplished with learning experiences in the following areas:

Excel – Spreadsheet
General applications: e.g., insert, name, and reference worksheets; apply the order of operations; use absolute, relative, and mixed cell references; apply numeric formats, cell alignment, styles, borders, shading

Specialized skills: e.g., create and modify a variety of charts; use advanced filters and sort multiple fields; nest functions (If, And, Or, VLookup, HLookup, Subtotal, etc.); use conditional formatting, slicers, sparklines, databars; apply table features; use what-if and data analysis tools; create PivotTables, and PivotCharts; use named ranges, connect to external data

Access – Database
General applications: e.g., create tables, queries, forms, and reports using Wizards; apply themes, conditional formatting, and alignment; sort, find, and filter records;

Specialized skills: e.g., customize tables, queries, forms, and reports; edit field types and properties; create primary keys and relationships; create action queries; import and export data

Diverse Issues
Teaching resources will be representative of real-world applications. Students will find relevance in their learning by using current technology to organize, share, and analyze a variety of case-related information.

Key Performance Indicators:
Student performance is assessed in the following areas:

Participation 0 to 10%

Assignments - Training and Projects 30 to 40%

Capstone Projects and Exams 30 to 50%

Final Project- Signature and Reflection Assignments 10 to 20%


Representative Text and/or Supplies:
Cengage Microsoft Office, New Perspective Series for Excel and Access, current edition or equivalent text(s); Cengage SAM (Skills Assessment Manager) - an online training resource. SAM provides instant feedback and simulates the MS Office environment. (current version or equivalent)


Pedagogy Statement:
The course will be delivered through in-class demonstration and/or video, hands-on simulated training and practice using software applications, performance projects, and reflection assignments.

Students will work on a variety of formative low-stakes assignments to gain confidence in their skills before performing summative high-stakes assessments. Students may have the opportunity to form study groups and/or use discussion boards to ask questions and post content to build a sense of community.
