Catalog Description: Credit through a special project may be earned if there is a demonstrated need that cannot be met through enrollment in a regularly scheduled course (this may include individualized projects and experiences that can contribute to student learning). Credit for a special project normally should be one or two credit hours, depending on the work completed. Projects must be approved by the Curriculum Committee. This course may be repeated for credit. Unless otherwise noted, the course will be graded as pass/fail.

Prerequisites: Contract acceptance/approval as described in the content section of this syllabus.

Justification: As described in the Curriculum Committee bylaws (at the time the creation of this syllabus), credit through a special project may be earned if there is a demonstrated need that cannot be met through enrollment in a regularly scheduled course.

This course syllabus is being created so that the opportunity to obtain credit via special projects is included in the college catalog and to provide a course number that can be used for those completing special projects.

Justification for a particular special project will be described in the contract form.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of the course, students will demonstrate to the instructor’s satisfaction that they have met the goals and outcomes outlined when the project contract was submitted. Learning outcomes and assessment will be agreed upon via the contract form. The student will submit a final reflection assignment.


Content:
The student, in consultation with the instructor, completes and signs a special projects contract form provided by the registrar's office. In the contract, the instructor specifies requirements and grading for the project. The respective division head must approve the contract and keep a copy of the approved form. The contract goes to the Curriculum Committee Division Representative for projects of one credit hour, and to the Curriculum Committee for projects of two or more credit hours. After the contract is approved, the student may register for the project. When the requirements have been completed and evaluated, the instructor should submit a grade online, or on a Grade Change Card.Generally, each credit hour should correspond to roughly 45-60 hours of effort.
