Course Description
This course will provide an accelerated, short-course format to introduce students to Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The course will focus completing basic and essential GIS tasks using ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.
Justification
This course is designed to provide essential skills that could be applied quickly to industry. The course will be focused on skills and procedures in GIS that are common to many areas of business and government. This course is being created as part of the Utah Learn and Work Initiative.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Students will be able to add and modify data with in a map and export the data.
- Students will be able to create a presentable map with essential cartographic elements.
- Students will be able to access and share GIS data through ArcGIS Online.
- Students will be able to understand and use vocabulary related to GIS and ArcGIS software.
Course Content
This course will cover the following:
- Introduction to GIS
- Basics of datums, projections, and coordinate systems
- Introduction to the ArcGIS Pro user interface
- Introduction to GIS data types and common uses
- Adding and modifying GIS data within a map
- Use of GIS in decision making and presentations
- Essential elements of professional maps
- Connecting GIS data with cloud resources (ArcGIS Online)
