Catalog Description: This course focuses on fundamental principles and specific techniques of music teaching. Students will reinforce, acquire and apply principles, techniques, methods, and philosophies of instrumental music performance. Required for instrumental performance majors.
Class discussions will include approaches to assist students to understanding teaching practices with respect to all performers and listeners. All classes will be designed to promote respect, social awareness and cooperation between all participants.

Justification: This course is required for students seeking teaching licensure in music. Course content dealing with ensemble management and rehearsal techniques are useful to students in the bachelor of music program as an elective credit.

Students will demonstrate an understanding of various methods of teaching the acquisition of rhythm, tonality, and melody and sensitivity to intonation. Students will be assessed through written assignments, course presentations, tests and exams.
Students will demonstrate an understanding of music curriculum planning, execution, and asessment. This will be assessed though field observation journals.
Content:

-Sound to symbol. Teaching rhythm and rhythm reading.
-Tonality, melody and singing. Improvisation and composition.
-History and philosophy of instrumental music education. Instructional design.
