“Your first job is important because it is a place to start. It is a stepping stone to what you want to achieve- but you shouldn’t stop there!” Will Slack, a student at Snow College gave this advice in a recent interview about his first job.

As a high school student, Will’s beginning job was as a worker at Taco Bell. To obtain this position, he initially went in to the fast food restaurant to ask for an application where he soon after filled out and turned in. After about a week of waiting for a response, he went in to talk to the manager as a follow up and was hired on the spot. You can note here that it is a mandatory step in the hiring process to follow up and stay in contact with the employers as you are looking for a line of work.

As he continued to work there, he learned skills that will help him in the field he is currently seeking – civil engineering. His transferrable skills included working in teams, communicating with co-workers and customers, learning how to manage a schedule with a job, and learning how to have a strong work ethic.

Will continued to work at this job for a year before deciding to go on a two-year service trip, where these interchangeable skills came in handy for him as well. Since then, he has put these accomplishments to the test through his studies and other achievements.
