ENGR 2705 - Lab #4

Title:

Quartus II Software and Development Education Board (DE2)

Objectives:
  • Become familiar with physical design tools in Altera Quartus II
  • Implement a circuit in a Cyclone II FPGA
  • Download a circuit into the programmable FPGA on the Altera DE2 Board
Parts:
  • PC running Quartus II
  • Altera DE2 Board with a Cyclone II FPGA
Preparation:
  1. Have Lab #3 projects (both schematic and Verilog) available for use.
  2. Look over Appendix C.1 and Appendix D.
  3. Look over the Development and Education Board User Guide.
Procedure (do as much before lab as possible):
  1. Set Project. Locate your project directory used in Lab #3 on your storage disk (copy to the hard disk if you prefer.). Open the appropriate project as outlined in Section C.1
  2. Physical Design. Work through Sections C.1.1 and C.1.2. Paste in your lab book the FITTER SUMMARY from the report file produced by the compiler. Also paste into your lab book the EQUATIONS from the report file.
  3. Timing Simulation. Work through Section C.1.3. Print the timing simulation results and paste it in your lab book. Be sure the printout shows the time at which f changes. Determine and record the worst-case timing delay.
  4. Pin Assignments. Work through all of Section D.1. Paste in your lab book any reasonable and useful information available from the software. Be sure to record the pin assignments made.
  5. Download Circuit. Work through Section D.2. After downloading the circuit into the Cyclone II FPGA.
  6. Test the circuit and record results in your lab book.
  7. Show your working circuit to the instructor.
Conclusions:
  1. Discuss how well the objectives were met.
  2. Discuss what you learned.
